Battle of the Big Boys Some people love their wings, other people hate their wings (but seriously, how can you ever HATE wings?). Regardless of where you stand, there are a handful of companies that are blazing the trail for the world of the chicken wing. Their devotion to the wing is endless and their dream to move the wing from the appetizer category to the center of the plate protein is shared. Here's the tale of the tape... The Wingstop Always-Online: www.wingstop.com Around Since: 1994 Number of Locations: Over 200 in January 2005 Geographic Coverage: 25 US states, mostly in the south The Low-Down: Wingstop was founded in 1994. They began franchising in 1997 and their first franchised unit opened in 1998. Wingstop restaurants are designed featuring a nostalgic, aviation-themed atmosphere. Wingstop features eight proprietary wing flavors, including Original Hot, Cajun, Atomic, Mild, Teriyaki, Lemon Pepper, Hawaiian Barbeque, and Garlic Parmesan. The wings are always made fresh-to-order and served steaming-hot. Wingstop also offers a variety of delicious sides including fresh-cut fries, soft drinks, beers and wine. Number of Locations: Over 350 as of March 2004 Geographic Coverage: 43 US states and 14 international countries. Hooters is alost everywhere in the states but their greatest coverage is in the Midwest and the south with 54 restaurants in Florida alone. The Low-Down: Although experience has shown that the quality of Hooters wings can vary from location to location and from day to day, Hooters usually can be relied on to crank out a decent wing. Many buffalo wing traditionalists scoff Hooters wings as over-hyped fried chicken with way too much breading. I personally believe that nothing can beat a perfectly prepared Hooters wing. Hooters has a traditional tiered wing pricing structure selling wings in 10, 20, and 50 piece intervals. Hooters sauces include a traditional buffalo style flavor in mild, medium, hot, 3 mile island, or 911 and a new "Spicy Jack" sauce. Little Known Fact: Hooters has an airline that is will be celebrating its second anniversary in March 2005. Hooters Air has flights serving Newark, Baltimore/Washington, Columbus, Atlanta, Myrtle Beach, Ft. Meyers, and Nassau, Bahamas. www.hootersair.com Search the Internet Hot Wing Database for locations in your area ------------------------------------------ Buffalo Wild Wings (formerly BW3) Always-Online: www.buffalowildwings.com Around Since: 1982, the first Buffalo Wild Wings and Weck (BW3) opened in Kent, OH Claim to Fame: "Wings, Beer, Sports, All the Essentials", Buffalo Wild Wings is known for its multiple wing sauces and its excellent sports bar environment. Number of Locations: Over 250 as of March 2004 Geographic Coverage: 30 US states, mostly in the Midwest and east coast. The Low-Down: Buffalo Wild Wings is a reliable place to go for an always good order of wings, a game, and a cold frosty brew. Their wings are served naked (non-breaded) which is a relief to buffalo wing traditionalists and come in tiered wing increments of 6, 12, 18, 24, 50, and 100 pieces. Buffalo Wild Wings is probably more known for their excellent variety of sauces (12 to be exact) which include teriyaki, sweet BBQ, smoky southwestern, mild, medium, spicy garlic (my personal favorite), caribbean jerk, thai, hot BBQ, hot, wild, and blazin'. Buffalo Wild Wings recently announced a new sauce and partnership relationship with Captain Morgan. Little Known Fact: Buffalo Wild Wings is a publicly traded company headquartered out of Minneapolis, MN. Their stock is traded on Nasdaq, BWLD, and is currently trading at about $26 per share (up from the original opening price of around $20/share). About 20,000 shares of BWLD change hands each day.
