2004 World Rib Eating Championships (Sanctioned by the IFOCE) Every once in a while, a public spectacle comes around that is so wrong, it's right. A new phenomenon of gustatory competition has swept the nation over the past few years and it all comes down to this one enormous event, the World Rib Eating Championships. World Rib Eating Championships "The Cookie has Crumbled" Breaking news from Lincoln City! Rich LeFevre pulled off a stunning upset victory over Ed "Cooke" Jarvis and the rest of the crowd. With picture perfect conditions in the tourist-drawn coastal berg of Lincoln City, OR, Rich LeFevre stepped to the plate and consumed 3.4 pounds of pork rib meat in 12 minutes (note that this is 3.4 lbs of pure meat, they weigh the total platter, the contestants eat, and they weigh bones and meat that are left over to determine the actual weight consumed). This was just barely enough for Rich to oust the reigning champion Ed "Cookie" Jarvis who threw back a cool 3.1 pounds of meat (down from last year's world record setting performance of 4.65 pounds). While we didn't get a chance to talk to Cookie after the event, I'm certain that Cookie will be back for revenge next year.
The champion Rich "The Locust" LeFevre and his ribs (see more pictures) "A Family Affair" It's not likely that Rich LeFevre's success will go to his head. Following Rich, Cookie, and an amateur eater whose first name is Nick (sorry Nick, we can't spell your last name) was LeFevre's lovely wife Carlene. Yep, all together the LeFevre's put down a combined 5.9 pounds of rib meat on this Saturday night. Carlene's pefromance of 2.5 pounds was good enough to net her fourth place and an honorable mention spot on the winners stage with her husband. This isn't the first time that they have competed together, they recently took on Takeru Kobayashi in the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Championships. When asked about what they did to prepare for the rib eating championships on Saturday, the LeFevres commented "well, we haven't eaten all day, we had a frappachino for breakfast and then took a five mile walk on the beach." Sounds like love at first bite for the LeFevres.
