Event Overview:

No discussion of competitive eating would be complete without talking about the grand-daddy of them all, the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Championships. Held every fourth of July on scenic Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY, this competition is considered by many as the birthplace of modern competitive eating.

Legend has it that the competition has been held since 1916 and the modern day event boasts qualifying events held in over 15 cities across the globe. At approximately 11:30 (EDT) on Sunday, July 4th, the qualifiers will emerge on the scene to crown the champion of famous twelve minute speed eating contest.

The legendary Takeru Kobayashi of Japan will attempt to defend his crown and win his fourth world-championship in a row. In 2001, Takeru doubled the existing record by consuming 50 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes, in 2002 he knocked back 50 again and in 2003 he finished first but dropped to 44 and 1/2 hot dogs and buns.

Rest assured that Kobayashi won't be walking away with this championship. An entire host of the world's greatest competitive eaters will be chasing including Sonya Thomas, Ed "Cookie" Jarvis, and Eric "Badlands" Booker. Many feel as if Sonya Thomas has the best chance to catch Kobayashi, but don't overlook Cookie and Badlands, they're both really hungry for a win...
