Takeru Kobayasi Sets a World Record!
Congrats to Takeru Kobayashi for winning his fourth Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Championship in a row.
This year's even didn't let anyone down. Kobayashi was a man with a mission. He set the early pace eating 22 dogs in the first four minutes. At the half way mark it was Kobayashi with 32, Shirota with 25, Booker with 20, and Cookie Jarvis with 19. With four minutes left it was a one man race, Kobayashi against the clock, he already knocked back 40 dogs and buns. Two minutes to go, Kobayashi had 46. Here's how it all ended up:
Takeru Kobayashi: 53.5
Nobuyuki Shirota: 38
Rich LeFevre: 27.75
Eric "Badlands" Booker: 27
Ed "Cookie" Jarvis: 27
Charlene LeFevre: 22
Jim Reeves: 21
Joe LaRue: 20
Allan Goldstein: 19
No discussion of competitive eating would be complete without talking about the grand-daddy of them all, the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Championships. Held every fourth of July on scenic Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY, this competition is considered by many as the birthplace of modern competitive eating.
Legend has it that the competition has been held since 1916 and the modern day event boasts qualifying events held in over 15 cities across the globe. At approximately 11:30 (EDT) on Sunday, July 4th, the qualifiers will emerge on the scene to crown the champion of famous twelve minute speed eating contest.
The legendary Takeru Kobayashi of Japan will attempt to defend his crown and win his fourth world-championship in a row. In 2001, Takeru doubled the existing record by consuming 50 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes, in 2002 he knocked back 50 again and in 2003 he finished first but dropped to 44 and 1/2 hot dogs and buns.
Rest assured that Kobayashi won't be walking away with this championship. An entire host of the world's greatest competitive eaters will be chasing including Sonya Thomas, Ed "Cookie" Jarvis, and Eric "Badlands" Booker. Many feel as if Sonya Thomas has the best chance to catch Kobayashi, but don't overlook Cookie and Badlands, they're both really hungry for a win...
