The
Scoop: Joe's first contest win was the
Domino's
pizza eating contest in Wildwood, NJ in 1990. He was on vacation with a
bunch of buddies who talked him into it.
The next contest wasn't till
he finally found out how to qualify for Nathan's contest at Rye Playland in
June of 2001. He won there to move on to Coney w/ 14.5 dogs. He has now
been in the Coney contest 3 yrs running w/ a high of 22 dogs. (so far) Joe is
currently the World
record holder and reigning champ in Conch Fritter Eating, w/45 in 6 minutes
and Sweet Corn Eating w/ 22 ears in 12 min. He also recently won a
Wing eating contest in Buffalo as part of Wingstock
VII and a Jamaican
beef patty contest as part of the 25th anniversary for Caribbean Foods. He
won a 1
minute pickle eating contest and came in 2nd to Cookie in the 5 minute
version by .5 of a pickle. Joe once ate 43 glazed donuts in 8 minutes
coming in 2nd
to Booker who had 49. You may have seen Joe on The
Glutton Bowl on Fox, ESPN, the Food Network, Discovery, Ripley's on TBS (airing
soon) and heard him on the radio. Recent press coverage of Joe has been in the
USA Today, the front page of the New Haven Register twice, Time Out New York magazine,
and several others. The Records: How Joe Got Started:
Joe first started doing eating stunts in 5th or 6th grade. Eating the foods other kids
didn't like. Such as 16 servings of baked beans & 12 servings of green
bean salad. Pets: Joe's family has 1 cat, 2
rabbits (that he'd like to eat), several hermit crabs, & a gold fish.
The animals are my his sons, except the cat which is Joe's. Family: Joe has been
married to his wife Tracy for 8 years. They have a son Jason who is 7 yrs old.
His wife is the one who talked him out of quitting after an unimpressive
outing while trying out a new hotdog eating style in Boston a little over
a year ago. Favorite Foods (to eat for
leisure and competition): Favorite
food to eat for leisure & probably competitively too is Pizza. Hobbies: Rotisserie or Fantasy Baseball, going to concerts. Words to Live By: "Live as you choose & most days will be good."
